Tile flooring is durable and relatively easy to clean by sweeping and mopping. However, when those tactics don’t work, sometimes homeowners decide to try more intense cleaning methods that can damage the tile’s appearance:
It’s crucial to use a damp, not wet, mop. Also, dirty mop water can seep into the tile’s surface. To avoid this, use a damp mop and change out the mop water frequently.
Cleaners with color
Tile can absorb the dye in these cleaning products, meaning that these types of cleaners can stain and tarnish unglazed tile.
A couple of major chemicals to avoid are bleach and muriatic acid. These shouldn’t be used for everyday cleaning since they can be dangerous (fumes, burns and respiratory problems), damaging (to fixtures, appliances and other surrounding belongings) and cause deterioration.
Abrasive cleaning tools
Don’t use things like steel wool or scrub pads to clean tile, since these types of tools can cause stains, scratches and can even ruin the finish on your tile. Instead, use a mop or microfiber cloth.
Wax, oils, and sealers
Waxes and wax-based products can protect your tile in the short term, but in the long term, these types of products can cause problems and even increase maintenance costs. Oil-based cleaners will make your tile surface slick, so there is an increased risk of slipping and falling. And lastly, sealers can be tricky to use if you don’t have the correct knowledge and experience and can lead to stains, slipping, or peeling.
